Anime North 2012 Con Report

So Anime North 2012 was this past weekend!

Hahaha I can hardly believe it's been 10 years since glayish and I first attended that convention (back in 2002). The con itself has definitely changed quite a bit since then.

I was actually certain that we wouldn't be going this year due to 2 corporate gala dinners being planned to happen close to the same date, and also for the fact that neither glayish or I decided to pre-register for the weekend.

It turned out that we finished our Slayers cosplays and got the weekend free, so we showed up to the TCC around noon on Saturday!

The parking lot was PACKED, and we ended up having to park all the way at the corner of the North building. I spotted a section that was green (lawl weeds) and relatively non-parking lot looking, so glayish and I decided to take a few photos of each other before the sun and heat baked off all our make-up.

Our cosplays turned out so well O_______o LOL!! There's something to be said about finishing your costume in advance and actually getting sleep before the con. At least, nothing broke horribly or malfunctioned in a way that ruined every photo. Well actually one of my red gems on my side-pouch-thing fell off while I was driving us to the con centre, but some double-sided tape stuck it right back on and held for the entire day.

glayish's facial prosthetics were great! The chin one gave issues while she ate, but otherwise the make-up totally held up.

After we got our photos of each other, we walked past the MASSIVE pre-registration line. Honestly the people standing in it looked so pissed off. Not to mention that the regular registration line (to buy a day-pass) was empty and all you had to do was walk in to get it.

Not many people took our photos, but given that it was Saturday and we were cosplaying from an old series (psjdjdj it's not THAT old technically Slayers Revolution & Slayers Evolution-R are from 2008), I'm not surprised. Lol;;; we kind of failed and did the same pose in each photo we did get taken XD;; I swear I can't find any where I'm looking in the opposite direction. Argh lol

Rock nam Lee was awesome and grabbed some super high quality shots of us :O!! I wish we had gotten more as a pair together, though we hadn't practised or thought of any poses beforehand, so that made it awkward to come up with something on the spot.

Lol; it is a little known (?) fact that I OTP Zelgadis x Amelia so hard. I was HUUGE into it and drew art and tried to write fic (lol so bad) and was a member of plenty yahoo groups back when yahoo groups were popular. LOL. In Revolution and Evolution-R the show kind of made ZelxAmelia into more of a friendship than romantic, but I still ship it very much so.

Amelia is my favourite anime girl character, so I was very happy to be able to cosplay her with some better skills this time around.

We ate lunch and then people-watched. OF COURSE, since glayish and I are totally into Thor & Loki (and the rest of those mortal Avengers lawl) right now, we had to grab photos of this clever fangirl ensemble of lolita Thor and Loki chained together.

They were also chained to an Odin.

I had to ask if it was Nick Fury or Odin. Lolll she said she was too white to be Nick Fury, but to be fair, she was wearing her eyepatch on the Nick Fury side. (Incorrect for Odin). :I

Oh look some more Avengers!! hAhahahhhh;; I didn't recognise Justine (Steve Rogers) until she turned around.

We hung out for a while, and then we saw Andy & his gf's Reboot group.
I had provided instructions on muscle-suiting (Matrix arms), make-up, and wig work (Bob/Mouse), so it was interesting to see them pull that together. Andy's gf has some serious cosplay skills, I liked her AndrAIa cosplay a lot XD.

It appeared that Andy didn't keep or replace the straps I rigged up for his muscle arms when I airbrushed them for him, cause they are falling down somewhat. Though apparently they were very rushed in getting ready and around to their various photoshoots and gatherings on Saturday, so that probably explains it.

We wandered around to the DoubleTree, and then back to the front of the TCC where we ran into kintaei, centzon and hikari_light!

kintaei was awesome with hikari_light's camera and got some pair shots of us!

Thanks so much you guys ;_;!!

We mostly hung around and saw people we hadn't in a long time. Which was good. Especially getting to talk to lelola for more than 2 seconds!! Which was great, because she was one of the very first people we met at Anime North sooo many years ago XD.

While surfing around for photos I noticed two things that we missed out on!!

ELMO. LIGHT. AND L. WITH THE YAOI PADDLE. OH GOD LOL. Last year the L versus Light yaoi paddle humilation round was the highlight of the dealers room. I sorely regret having missed this free for all.

AND THIS.

CELL X FRIEZA!! YES. WHY ARE PEOPLE DOING DBZ YAOI THE *ONE TIME* I'M NOT at the DBZ Gathering!?

Y_Y *cry a river*

Anyway, later we met up with Gary and his gf and big group of friends from the States. We hung out with Gary last AN and it was great to be able to do it again this year. They were so funny!! XD

Originally we had planned to eat dinner with SutekiGo + Andrew & Jess, but they were exhausted from their FF8 group and were in the dealers room where Kaiser-Mony had a booth, so we got to join Gary + co instead.

It was an awesome time, and the food at the Sushi Time was good stuff (though it was difficult to eat the big portion while still in cosplay at the end of the day).

We stayed until late and eventually it was around 11pm, so glayish and I had to decline hotel room cake and walk back to our car then drive home.

On Sunday, glayish and I did totally last minute closet L and Light cosplay to show up at the con XD.

LAWD.

Bahah on Friday night on the way to the gas station, I bought a length of chain and then attached it to some handcuffs we already had. Instant cosplay times. SAD. More people took our photos as L & Light than as Zel & Amelia looool.

Anyway, we got to the con around noon again, and then immediately went to get burgers at Harveys. We were voraciously hungry from not being able to eat much the night before. Normal pants and belts means eating is possible lolol.

Texted chibik3r0 and went to watch their Splicer photoshoot with viewpoints.

centzon was there and we had lots of fun spending the rest of the day with her!! <3!! I wish I could go to more cons with centzon XD!! I remember we didn't get much time to Death Note together at Otakon 2011 on Sunday, so being able to spend more of Sunday with her was great fun XD.

We kind of wandered around, took photos, and saw people (like kintaei, ochika, mekou and yavarice ).

We finally got to see SutekiGo at the end of the day. There FF8 cosplays were amazing, and the props were crazy good. I want to know how to build props from styrene now o_o.

After that, the weather turned gray, and we went to a dinner at Jack Astors. (Which pretty much everybody we know from the Toronto con circuit was seated at 9 realms worth of tables.)

I forgot to mention; I was pretty much ODIN all weekend. XD

I cast Thor ( glayish )out about 9 times bahahahah XD. And Loki ( centzon ) once. Because he gave me amazing cookies. So he could stay worthy in Asgard. HAHA.

In the end we said our goodbyes and dropped mekou back at her hotel before we headed home. All around, the con was very low pressure and laid-back, and we got some great photos and some fun times. We never did end up going to any panels or inside the dealers room (I missed seeing the masquerade though).

Most likely we won't be going to ACEN or Otakon this year. But definitely FanExpo. Hopefully I can figure out something to cosplay for that seeing as how I've used up almost all my non-group cosplay ideas XD.
